Celebrating Individuality

In the past, many parents felt that it was important for their kids to be like all the others and fit in. They couldn’t help but compare them to other kids in their class, playgroup, or age group as whole. Of course, this came from a place of love – we just want things to be easy for them.

The truth is, all kids are special and unique, and that’s just one of the many wonders that make them such a joy. Their quirks, humour and perspective on life continue to surprise and delight us.

Fortunately, there’s a fabulous new trend in parenting where we just let our kids be themselves. If they want to wear a super hero top with a princess tutu for picture day, great! If they want to take ballet while all their friends are in hockey practice, wonderful! If there’s a mud puddle that’s calling their name, have at it! As long as they feel happy, supported and loved, it’s all good.

One of our teams’ daughter consistently wraps the toilet paper around the handle of the bar 2 times so that she can one-hand it while watching her iPod touch ;-) Awesome, no?

Individuality

Here’s to celebrating all things wonderful and weird about our kids. What does your child do that’s unique and different? How do you nurture, encourage and capture it?
