It’s easier to be more of an observer when it comes to capturing moments in your children’s lives. Sometimes you do it as a documentarian, without creating a disturbance, you try to record a beautiful moment unfolding before your eyes. And other times you play more of a director’s role, telling your kids to look up, smile, or say happy birthday to Grandma!
In making all these efforts to take beautiful photos and create memorable movies of the kids growing up, it’s easy to forget to include a very important part of their lives: You, silly!
And that doesn’t just refer to special occasions either. It’s not about setting the camera on timer or passing it off to some one else in the family to pose for a picture around a cake. Try having your spouse take pictures while you read to the kids, make dinner together, or push them on a swing. When they’re old enough you can even give the camera to your kids and have them take some pictures. In a way, you’ll get to see yourself through their eyes and that can be truly amazing.
So, don’t be so camera shy, mom and dad. You look great! Honest. And you and your kids will appreciate your efforts in both getting behind and in front of the camera in the future.
