Photo Streams: The Giant Digital Tupperware

Some of us (thankfully) like to share photos with a little more discretion, especially when it comes to pics of our kids. Perhaps Facebook is not the most appropriate place to post Dylan’s first time on the potty. Well, unless you want to add to his arsenal of “What Mommy Did Wrong” for future therapy sessions. But at the same time, how can you not show your closest friends and family?! He’s so cute with his chubby legs dangling and that proud grin on his face.

So, we throw those types of photos up on the somewhat exclusive, semi-private photo stream. Which is great; but then what? Sure, they get shared and liked and commented on by the people who were lucky enough to be invited to view them, but what happens after that? They just seem to pile up in there. There’s no order, no structure, no fun! It’s like a giant Tupperware, but digital and taking up space on our phone and computer instead of under your bed.

It also makes even the idea of creating a photo album that much more daunting. We all want to make them. They make great gifts and appease those relatives from the “Why don’t people print pictures anymore?!” generation. But spending your downtime (read: after the kids go to bed), sifting through hundreds of pictures on your phone or computer is probably at the bottom of your to-do list. Somewhere between finally reading that book that’s been collecting dust on your nightstand and cleaning out your closet.

While the photo stream seems to be a little more special or intimate than Facebook and Instagram when it comes to sharing, it’s still flawed in its structure and lack of organization. The ideal option would be one that lets you share, keep track and categorize all those Too-Cute-Not-to-Share moments. Keep in mind, when your kids get older, they’re probably still going to resent you for all of those nudy-patudy pics, but at least they’ll be organized.  What do you think? How would you want to share and organize your family pics?
